Making New Friends
Be yourself.
Talk to others around you on the school bus or in the
classroom before the lessons start. Other new people
will be feeling nervous too.
At lunch or break times suggest going together with
others so you can sit together or talk together.
Find out about lunch time or after school clubs and
groups that interest you and join one. For example,
there may be sport, music, drama or book clubs.
Concentrate on being friendly towards others rather
than worrying about how many new friends you have.
Seek out past friends from your previous school if
there are any.
If you feel alone and find it hard to make new friends
then find out if the school has a ‘buddy’ scheme for
new pupils. Ask a teacher about this.
Keep up your old out of school interests or hobbies if
you can so that you have some familiar places and
people to see.
