P. 2
What is bullying?
Bullying is when someone is picked on by someone
else or a group of people. They are regularly picked on
because they are seen to be different in some way. Those
doing the bullying think they are better and entitled to
verbally, emotionally or physically assault the person.
Verbal bullying is name calling or using insulting
words and speech. Emotional bullying can include
excluding or ignoring someone, making someone feel very
scared or unwanted.
Another type of bullying is called cyber bullying. Here
the bullies target their victim through, for example, emails,
Facebook messages or text messages. The messages are
unkind or abusive and usually spread when others are
enticed to join in or read them.
When victims can’t stop the bullying or get help to get
it stopped it may go on for a very long time. Bullied people
often feel afraid, intimidated and develop low self-esteem
and confidence problems.
In extreme cases people who are bullied can
develop mental health problems, social and relationship
difficulties and may be affected in some ways for the rest
of their lives. This is because bullying is serious abuse.
Bullying is never right or justified and no one
deserves to be bullied.
