How to deal with bullying
When it first starts, if you can, ignore it or walk away.
Bullies love a reaction. So don’t give them one. If they
don’t get any reaction or sign from you that their behaviour
troubles you they may well decide they are wasting their
time. They might even look stupid! If you can maintain
ignoring the bullying it should stop.
Don’t get upset or angry in front of the bully.
Remember bullies thrive on reaction. If you can then
confide in a friend, a teacher or someone in your family.
Talk things through with someone whom you feel is on
your side. This will make you feel stronger. Trying to deal
with bullying on your own often feels much worse.
Remember: try to ignore it!
Stay with your own friends as much as possible when
around the bullies. Tell your friends you need their help to
ignore the bullies. Tell them not to react to the nasty
behaviour.
If you are on your own then remember that body
language speaks volumes. Stand tall, hold your head up,
don’t look afraid or anxious. At least try to look confident
even if you don’t feel it.
Remember: bullies are the ones with the problems,
not you!
Try to feel good about yourself. Make a list of all the
things you are good at. Get your friends to help you do this
if possible.
