might have told it.
“What about you?” Lauren was
asking.
“What?” said Gary.
“Why are you here again?”
Gary wanted to say that he was
only staying because Josie and Tom
were his aunt and uncle. It was
nothing to do with his dad. But, well,
he wouldn’t say it like that because it
wouldn’t be fair to Lauren. And
because he knew, deep down, that if
it wasn’t for Josie and Tom then he
would probably be a foster kid too.
Like Lauren, there was no one else to
look out for him either.
