Gary didn’t answer the question.
He changed the subject.
“What have you got in that bag?
Chunks of rock or something?”
“Very funny,” Lauren said. She
plopped herself down on the bed next
to her bag. “I haven’t brought a bath
towel. Can you get me one from the
airing cupboard?”
“Er,” said Gary, “and why would I
want to do that when you can easily
go get yourself a bath towel from the
airing cupboard.”
Lauren took hold of a few
strands of her long hair and peered
out at him.
“Well, see,” she said, “your uncle
said to look after me didn’t he? Just
