Strange. The road and their car seemed to have

disappeared. Had they really walked that far?

The cottage looked unusually old. It had a thatched

roof and no doorbell. Mum banged hard on the door. A

woman in a long skirt and a headscarf answered. Mum

explained what had happened to their car and asked if they

could use a telephone to call the breakdown service. The

woman looked at them as though they were both daft. She

called her husband. He also looked at them as though they

               were both daft.

“You’re not from round here then?” he said staring at

               Jasmine’s flip-flops and leggings.

“N…no,” said Mum. “You can’t help then?”

                       “Sorry,” said the man.

“Well, never mind,” said Mum. “We’ll have to go back

to the road and hope someone will stop and help us.”

The man and woman stared at them again.

“You won’t be stopping for a pitcher of water before

you go then?” said the woman.
