“It’s okay,” said Mum. But Jasmine could tell that

Mum had been scared too.

Luckily, a few minutes later a passing breakdown van

spotted Mum waving at the side of the road. She had seen

it approaching in the rear view mirror and leapt out. The

driver pulled over to help them.

He checked the engine over and soon had it fixed.

“Good job I was passing,” he said. “You’re in the

middle of nowhere here.”

“Yes,” said Mum. “We walked through the woods and

asked a couple in an old cottage if we could phone from

there. I think they were a bit odd though.”

The mechanic looked puzzled. He looked round at the

fields on both sides of the road.

“What cottage was that then?” he asked.

Jasmine pointed through the line of trees on their left.

“That’s strange! It was over there, Mum, wasn’t it?”
