I was still thinking about it five minutes
later when Clara and Mum set off late for
the audition. Dad was supposed to be in
charge of us boys, but he disappeared out
of the back door to do some clearing up
down the bottom of the garden.
Jake thought we should set out after
Clara straight away. After all, there were
only ten minutes to go before the predicted
disaster time. I lingered a moment, though.
In the rush, Clara had left her bedroom door
open and I spotted something interesting on
the floor under her bed. I took a closer look
            – it was a plain glass jar. Not exciting in
itself, but the contents were. Money! Lots of
it! I could make out at least one ten pound
                                                                        53
