“What’s that?” said Mr Snarling. “Is that a

powder to get rid of the woodworm?”

Billie tried hard not to giggle. If that was

what Mr Snarling wanted to think then no

one would tell him he was wrong.

“Some of those powders can be very

powerful,” said Gran. “I read somewhere

that it can dissolve your shoes if you tread

on it.”

Mr Snarling now thought that the house

had strange woodworm species and

dangerous powders on the floors.

“Oh dear,” he said. “I really don’t like the
