It wasn’t all bad though. I got fifteen cards

and five presents from the other kids in my

class. The whole morning felt a bit different

anyway – weird kind of different. It was like

everyone was waiting for something. What

with the excitement of the last week and my

birthday I’d almost forgotten what it was.

Then last lesson before lunch Miss Morris

tapped the front table with her pen and said

she had an announcement to make. The

class went quiet. Miss Morris was holding

            an envelope.

“I have here the names of the ten winners

of the ‘What I am going to be when I grow

            up’ competition,” she said.
