Every time Jay had to walk somewhere he
did his Walking Thing. The other kids watched
him at first but didn’t say anything.
Then he got lost twice. The first was after
morning break. Abby had left her jumper
outside and ran back to get it. Jay hadn’t
wanted to go back to the classroom without
her, so he had hovered around the door
waiting for her to come back. But Abby was
ages. Then everyone else had lined up and
was gone and he had to find his own way back
to the classroom. He decided to follow the
noise and ended up in the staff room.
The second time was after lunch. He’d gone
off in search of the boys’ toilets, but ended up
nearly walking into the girls’ ones.
As far as Jay was concerned quarter past
three just didn’t come fast enough.
