Feel at home? Jay knew what that meant. It
wasn’t anything to do with actually being at
home in his house. It just meant feeling
alright, relaxed like you might at home. It was
one of those odd things people said.
Jay looked nervously around at the other
kids. He could feel the stares of those sitting
behind him. He shivered. Why were they
staring like that? Of course. He’d known it was
going to be like this. They’d obviously heard
about his Aspergers. That’s why they were
staring. It was horrible. But then Jay got a
surprise. The stares turned to smiles. Jay was
puzzled. They were being friendly then? Jay
couldn’t imagine having friends at this school.
Miss Field was handing out pieces of paper
and everyone was reaching for pens from the
pen pots in the middle of the tables.
