“This is our maths test day, Jay,” Miss Field

said. “Just have a go. You might find you can

do them, but don’t worry if you can’t this

time.”

Everyone sat with pens ready.

Miss Field was handing out sheets of paper

that had sums on.

He had a go, but only five of his ten

answers looked right.

Afterwards they swapped tests - Jay

marked Abby’s and Abby marked Jay’s. Jay

had got them all right. It was a miracle.

Next they did Chinese numbers. Jay didn’t

know anything about Chinese - not unless you

counted king size prawns and crispy fried

duck, which were his favourites from the

takeaway.
