Chapter Five

Jay kept his eyes shut tight and pulled the

duvet over his head. He kept totally still - the

only movement came from his chest as he

breathed in and out at an unusually fast rate. It

was dark under the cover, but not dark

enough. If he opened his eyes he would be

able to see that it was daylight. Not just dawn

            daylight, but real time-to-get-up-daylight. He

moved his hands from clutching the covers

and, with his eyes still squeezed shut, placed

a finger in each ear. If he didn’t do that he

would hear the twittering of garden birds in

the tree just outside his bedroom window and

the zooming of traffic along the main road at

the end of the street. And Jay didn’t want to

hear either. He wanted it to be quiet - night-

time quiet - as well as dark. That way he could

                                                                        43
