Then Dad put his head around the door.
“Doing your homework already?”
Alfie shook his head. He told Dad what had happened at school.
Dad sat down on the bed next to Alfie.
“Never mind,” he said. “Grandad will soon have it fixed. Don’t
worry. Anyway, it was Grandad’s invention. He should have been the
one to show everyone how it worked. That’s what he’s good at.”
“That’s just it,” said Alfie miserably. “Why is it that everyone in
this family is good at something except me?”
“Well, that’s just not true,” said Dad. “Of course you’ll find what
you’re really good at one day.”
Alfie shook his head.
“What if there isn’t anything?”
“There is,” said Dad, “And in the meantime you’re pretty good at
just being you. How about helping out downstairs?”
“The inspectors’ visit?” said Alfie.
Dad nodded.
“Exactly! It’s tomorrow, remember.”
