Alfie realised this was terrible for two reasons. First of all his
parents, or even the plumber, would have to dismantle the pipe and
fish around in the U bend looking for Grandad’s teeth. Secondly,
Grandad would never go to school without his smart new set of
teeth and talking funny and it was already time to leave.
“You’ll just ‘ave to go w’out me, Alfie!” said Grandad.
“But what about the How Things Work project?” said Alfie.
“You’ll just have to show everyone how it works,” said Mum.
“You can do that, can’t you Alfie? I’m sure Miss May won’t mind.”
Alfie wasn’t so sure about that. It wouldn’t be the same without
Grandad to explain things. Everyone would be so disappointed. It
was terrible! What would Miss May say? Alfie took a deep breath. He
had no choice.
Five minutes later he left for school without Grandad – the
Automatic Back Massager in a box under his arm.
Miss May was disappointed that Alfie’s Grandad couldn’t be in
school with his invention. But, of course she understood. It was
soon time for the lesson.
“Alfie’s Grandad can’t be here to show us his invention himself,”
said Miss May.
