Miss May looked startled.
“It’s for your grandfather,” she said. “It’s an invitation. I wondered
if he would like to come into school tomorrow and bring one of his
new inventions. It’s for our special How Things Work project.”
Alfie took the envelope. What a relief! It was only for Grandad.
Miss May had heard all about Grandad’s inventions. Alfie had been
telling everyone at school about them since he was in Year One.
And he had been telling everyone about Grandad’s latest invention
all term. Everyone was expecting it to be something amazing.
“Could he bring it in?” said Miss May.
Alfie nodded.
“I hope so!” he said. “He did say it would be ready now!”
Alfie only lived around the corner from school. He was allowed to
walk home on his own. Today he ran. He was home in three minutes.
He rushed straight to the workshop.
“Slow down there!” said Grandad as Alfie burst through the door
and tossed his school stuff to one side.
Alfie was about to say, “Where is it? Let’s see it then!” but he
didn’t need to. There in front of him, after all that waiting, was
