He pushed his test paper aside. His sketch pad was underneath,

open at a fresh page. Alfie started doodling. Sometimes if he

doodled it helped him remember things. Alfie drew a picture of a

        computer. It was very good.

“Finish that last word and put your pencils down,” said Miss May.

Suddenly Alfie remembered: It was ‘er’. It was definitely ‘er’. He

wrote it quickly and put his pencil down. Phew! It was over. It was

home time at last. Alfie felt a ripple of excitement as he remembered

Grandad’s invention. Miss May was collecting the spelling tests and

telling everyone to fetch their coats.

“Don’t forget the extra day off school on Thursday,” she was

        saying.

No one had forgotten. The school was going to be closed

because the heating needed fixing. It would be the same day as the

        restaurant inspectors’ visit.

Alfie was about to make a dash for the door.

“Alfie Dickens! A word with you, please!”

Alfie stopped. Now what? Miss May was standing right by his

desk and pointing at his sketch pad.
