ironing board, which Lily had just managed to get into a standing

        position, and the fourth...

             “Ow!”

...shot across the room and wopped Dad in the face as he entered

        the kitchen.

“I just don’t understand what’s gone wrong with that machine,”

said Grandad. “It was working perfectly last week. They’re supposed

        to land on the plates.”

“I’ll help you fix it,” said Alfie, hoping this might get him entry to

the workshop and a look at Grandad’s new invention.

“I’ll tell you what does need fixing,” said Lily, speed ironing her

jeans, “and that’s your hair, Dad.”

It was true. Ever since Dad had accidentally washed his hair in

Mum’s hair dye instead of shampoo a week ago he had been walking

        around with green hair.

“Funny how it went green when it said brown on the bottle,” she

        frowned.

“Very odd indeed,” said Dad, who seemed strangely unbothered

by the accident. “But at least now your mother and I are a matching

        pair.”

                                                                                                                8
