Grandad slotted some sliced bread into the Automatic Breakfast
Server. The Automatic Breakfast Server was just one of Grandad’s
many inventions. Grandad might be seventy-five years old but his
inventions, which had earned him a living for many years, were still
going strong. Sometimes Grandad managed to invent quite useful
things. Like the time he’d designed a supermarket trolley with
brakes and gears. And his electric house window washers were still
selling like hot cakes.
Since Grandad had come to live with Alfie and his family in the
flat above the restaurant, he did most of his inventing in the garage.
He had turned it into a workshop. No one was allowed in Grandad’s
workshop while he was working on things. He liked them to be a
surprise and had been busy on his latest idea for about two months
now.
Ping! Ping! Ping!
The warning bell on the Automatic Breakfast Server sent Grandad
and Alfie rushing to put four plates in position on the kitchen table.
Zoom! The first slice of toast shot out and landed on the floor.
The second followed and landed in the sink. The third landed on the
