Grandad was getting the Automatic Breakfast Server ready to
take down to his workshop. It might be an unusual idea, but Alfie
knew Grandad would get it working. He always got things working. It
was what he was good at. He stuffed his homework into his book
bag. It seemed to Alfie that everyone in his family was good at
something. Mum had the restaurant running like clockwork and Lily,
who was seventeen now, was the best waitress ever. Only the other
day she had managed to carry five dinner plates, two jugs of gravy
and a large cherry cheesecake all at the same time. If he tried
that...well, it didn’t bear thinking about.
Alfie didn’t think that there was anything that he was good at. In
fact, at school he always felt stupid. Alfie had dyslexia and had extra
sessions at school from a special teacher called Miss Jennings.
Miss Jennings was always telling Alfie that there was nothing wrong
with his brain. He just learned in a different way. It didn’t mean he
was stupid and one day he’d find out what he was good at. Danny
stuffed his sketch book into his rucksack with his lunch box.
“See you later then,” said Grandad. “Good luck with the spelling
test.”
Alfie groaned. Spelling - definitely not something he was good at.
