Chapter Two
“And now get your spelling books out please, Year Five!”
Alfie had been dreading those words all day. Miss May had left
the test until ten to three. The whole day had been torture. The
whole class had been in torture. Apart from Robert Belch, of course.
Robert Belch always got his spellings right.
Robert sat next to Alfie.
“Good luck,” he whispered.
“Hmm!” said Alfie. He needed more than luck. He needed a brain
like Robert’s.
“The first word,” Miss May said, “Is INDIGESTION.”
It wasn’t fair. Alfie couldn’t remember any words like that in the
list.
“It’s a surprise word!”said Miss May. “Write it down everyone!”
It was a surprise all right. A nasty surprise. Robert was the only
one writing. The next six words were better. But then came another
hard one, almost as bad as Indigestion. It had been on the list, but
Alfie just couldn’t remember how it went.
COMPUTER. Was that ‘er’ at the end or ‘or’?
