Alfie didn’t answer. He went over to a cupboard and started
clattering about with breakfast bowls.
“Careful!” said Lily. “You’ll break one of those in a minute. Mind
that…”
Crash! Alfie caught the biscuit tin with his elbow. It landed on the
floor. Alfie didn’t appear to notice.
“Is Mum still in bed?” he asked, settling himself down at the
breakfast table.
No answer.
“Why isn’t anyone talking to me?” he added.
Lily was peering at Alfie’s ears – or rather at what was still in
them.
“There’s something wrong with his ears!” she said to Grandad.
Grandad put the newspaper down and looked very seriously at
Alfie.
“Only the right one,” he said. “He’s always had odd ears. Like me.
It’s a family characteristic.”
“No,” Lily frowned. “Not that.”
“What are you two whispering about?” said Alfie.
