her spare pair of earplugs. Alfie had slept all night without one
single snortling snoring noise disturbing him.
He couldn’t wait to tell Mum the earplugs had worked.
Alfie crashed down the corridor towards the kitchen. Grandad
was sitting at the kitchen table reading yesterday’s newspaper. Lily
was having a fight with the ironing board which was refusing to
stand up.
“Where’s Mum?” Alfie said.
Grandad jumped from behind his paper.
“Oh, morning Alfie. No need to shout. Your mum’s gone out early
to get the shopping.”
Alfie didn’t appear to have heard.
“Is Mum up yet?” he asked.
Lily was shaking the ironing board.
“She’s out!” she said.
“Pardon?” said Alfie.
Lily looked at Grandad. Grandad looked at Lily. They both looked
at Alfie.
“Alfie, what’s the matter with your hearing this morning?” said
