The boys had recovered and were on
their feet. They began walking in the
direction of their street. Josh was
carrying Gary’s jacket.
“I’ll hide this for you,” he said. “You’ll
just have to say you lost it. Say you
left it somewhere and when you went
back someone had taken it.”
Gary nodded. That might work.
“You’re serious about being there
when Lauren arrives? I thought you
two hated each other.”
‘Hate’ was a strong word. Gary
shrugged. It was true he and Lauren
(one of Josie and Tom’s foster kids)
didn’t get on that well. Gary found it
really hard to like her. But he had
agreed to be there to say hello when
