Chapter Six

“D’you think there’s a serious

chance she might be deaf or

something?” Josh was saying.

It was the next morning and

Gary and Josh were cycling side by

side along the cycle track that led to

the park. Gary had told his friend what

had happened with the smoke alarm –

the one in Lauren’s bedroom – the

night before. Lauren had lit five

candles and fallen asleep while they

flickered and glowed on the shelf

above her bed which was beneath a

smoke detector. They’d obviously

eventually triggered the alarm which

had woken everyone else in the

house except her.
