deliberately set smoke alarms off, of
course. It was just that he understood.
Gary knew he had to stop
thinking about all this.
“Can’t wait to get to the den. A
whole day there. Cool!” he said.
He had gone round to his
friend’s house early. Josh had texted
him half an hour before asking if he
was up to cycling to their den. The
plan was to take snacks and their
swimming gear and stay all day. Of
course, Josie had said it would be
fine. Everyone knew about the boys’
den – their own hideout by the lake at
the park.
