Somehow Gary knew Lauren

had known the smoke from the

candles would set off the smoke

detector. He didn’t want to admit why

exactly he knew, but he just did. The

truth, the bit Gary didn’t want to admit

to himself, was that deep down he

was just like Lauren. They were both

staying with Josie and Tom for the

same reasons: their parents couldn’t

look after them right now. That could

make you feel ignored or make you

feel like doing things you didn’t really

want to do – just so someone would

notice you and notice how unfair it all
