meant he had to go and do something. Jay
didn’t like being interrupted. He liked to be
able to do what he was thinking about doing.
Otherwise too many thoughts crowded in his
brain. Jay stood up to walk across his
bedroom to the door. He looked down and
watched his feet as he walked. He put his left
foot very carefully in front of his right foot so
that his left heel touched his right toes. Then
he put his right foot very carefully in front of
his left foot in the same way. He did this three
more times until he had taken five steps. Then
he walked forwards normally and got to the
door. Jay often walked like this if he was tired
or fed-up or worried – five steps heel to toe
before he walked forwards normally. Dad
called it his Walking Thing.
