He crossed the landing and went slowly
downstairs to the kitchen. Dad was
rummaging through the freezer.
“Abby’s coming round!” he said. “Her mum
has got to work an extra shift so I’ve said she
could come over for a few hours.”
“Oh,” said Jay. “That’s good.”
Jay brightened at the thought of Abby
coming round. The crossness and fed-upness
started to go a bit.
“It will give you two a chance to talk about
school,” Dad went on. “You’re the same age
and will be in the same class at Hill Road, you
know.”
“Oh,” said Jay a second time. The fed-up
feeling crept back. It was the word ‘school’
that did it.
