Chapter Two

Twenty-Four Hours Earlier:

GAME OVER.

Jay stared at the two words sprawled across

the computer screen. Arms folded he leaned

back and swivelled the chair gently side to

side. He needed to think about this.

He felt as though he had seen those words

a hundred times. Maybe he had. After all, he’d

had the game, The Journey, for ages. Maybe

this really was the one hundredth time he had

got to the end of level one, only to be

defeated. Each time he struggled to get the

Pioneers through the jungle. Each time he

managed to help them to outrun the

Groundlings, avoid the traps and find paths

around the obstacles. But each time he got to
