Chapter Sixteen

Jay missed the shade of the forest trees as

they walked on in the hot sun. The tall grasses

became shorter and shorter. They were

walking over stubby tufts that were covered in

sand. They were getting nearer and nearer to

the desert. Soon there would be nothing to

shade them from the scorching heat. The

Pioneers were in for an uncomfortable last few

days of travel. Jay pulled at his shirt. He felt

hot and smelly. He longed for a shower and

some clean clothes to put on.

Miraculously they stumbled upon a cool,

            shaded pool of water.

“Water! Water!” Flick shrieked in delight.

Soon they were all running towards it and

            jumping straight in.

                “Come on!” Flick shrieked.

                                                                       178
