breeze had got up and was fanning the camp
fire. It spat and crackled in the darkness.
The light from the flames together with the
light of a full moon helped as Jay and Abby
stepped lightly and quietly away from the
sleeping Pioneers. They’d left their rucksacks
and sleeping blankets behind. If they were
going back to the real world it didn’t seem
right to take the Pioneers’ things with them –
all except for one weapon which Jay would
keep until the last moment.
“Just in case!” he’d whispered.
Soon they were out of sight and had
disturbed no one. It would have felt better to
have been able to say goodbye, but they
couldn’t explain about the real world and
about needing to get back. They would have to
leave unseen and alone at some point.
