Jay’s heart was thumping hard in his chest.

It was an eery, scary thing they were doing -

sneaking away in the dark. He looked at the

path that stretched out before them. It went

straight through the desert. The breeze

disturbed some of the sand and they had to

shield their eyes for a moment.

“D’you think it’s safe out there?” Abby

whispered. She wasn’t sure why she was

whispering. They were too far away from the

Pioneers for them to hear.

“As long as we stay on the path

remember?” Jay said. “Come on. Just look

out for anything - well, unusual. It will be

easier to look on our own.”

They examined every inch of the sand

covered path. They zig zagged from one side

of the path to the other. They tried jumping,
