The last comment came from Zak. Ella was

staring ahead. She didn’t seem to be staring at

anything in particular like a rock or a tree or

part of the path. Jay was puzzled. What were

they all looking at?

“Yes!” said Ella. “It is! It is!”

The Pioneers rushed towards whatever it

was. Jay was beginning to think they had all

gone mad. Hurrying after them, he finally saw

what they were looking at. They had been

hoping to find somewhere to shelter for the

night hadn’t they? Jay had expected to see a

building or something like that. But it wasn’t

shelter the Pioneers had found. It was some

sort of image at the side of the path in front of

them. At first it was very faint, but the harder

Jay looked the clearer it became. It was the

shape of an open book and on the page were
