“What’s in your mum’s shopping bag today then?”

               she demanded.

“Stop it, Helen. Leave him alone,” said Becky. She

wished the small boy would speak up and say something

               back.

Helen grabbed the boy’s bag and pulled out a

chocolate bar. She put it in her pocket. The boy seemed to

let her. Becky was furious but Helen just laughed.

“I keep telling you, it’s just a bit of fun!” she said.

The next Saturday the girls met up down at the

               shopping precinct.

Becky spotted the boy first. He was sitting on a low

wall outside the town library. He had his head in a book.

The rollerblades were on the ground next to him.

“He’s always got those with him,” said Helen.

There was a menacing look in her eyes and Becky

knew exactly what her friend was thinking.

“Oh, come on!” she said. “Let’s go and look round the

               shops.”

                                                                                                        27
