Just Having Fun

The first time they saw him was the day before the

start of the new school year. Taking a short cut through

the park, Becky and Helen had nearly bumped into him.

Helen had just stuck a lump of chewing gum on a park

bench. Then she had watched as a man with a white stick

had sat on it.

“You shouldn’t have done that!” said Becky. But

Helen just laughed. Then the boy had pelted up on his

rollerblades. He swerved suddenly to go around them but

Helen stuck out her foot. Wobbling, he crashed into a tree.

He looked back at Helen but said nothing.

“Watch out, stupid!” Helen laughed.

“What did you do that for?” Becky said.

“Just for fun!” grinned Helen.

The next day at school they came across the same

boy in the corridor. He was in the year below them - one of

the new Year Sevens just up from primary school. He had a
