“Boring!” said Helen. “This will be much more fun!”
Before Becky could stop her she darted forward and
snatched the blades. The boy looked up but he just gave
Helen that unbothered look of his again.
Helen put the blades on her own feet.
“Don’t mind if I have a go do you, nerd?” she said.
The boy barely looked up from his book. He shrugged.
But Becky thought that this time there was a slight smile
on his face.
“Look, Becky,” Helen tried. “Don’t! Give them back to
him!”
Helen laughed.
“Oh, for goodness sake! I’m just having fun!”
Roller blades on, she whizzed up the pavement,
darted in and out of doorways and swerved round a
rubbish bin. She nearly collided with a woman with a
pushchair and crashed into an elderly man.
“Out the way!” Helen yelled at them.
