Kim shrugged. Jack believed anything. It was so

funny. But she had to keep an eye on Uncle Mike.

Mike was looking in the cupboard in Jack’s room. He

shone a torch into the corners. He picked up specks of

dust and examined them. He looked puzzled.

Then he put the ladder under the attic trap door and

climbed up. Kim waited at the bottom. He pushed back

the attic door. Then he climbed inside. He was gone for

ages. Kim could hear him crawling about and moving

things. After a bit she called out:

“Have you found any mice yet, Uncle Mike?”

Mike reappeared at the top of the ladder and came

back down. He called Mum.

“It’s very strange,” he said, “but I’ve found no

evidence of mice in your house at all.”

Mum was surprised.

“Well, we’ve definitely been hearing noises?” she

said. “If it’s not mice what could it be?”

Uncle Mike shook his head.
