then I’ll come back and release them into a field or

somewhere nearby.”

“Oh, that sounds much kinder,” said Mum.

“I’ll just go out to the van and get the equipment.

Then perhaps you could show me exactly where you’ve

heard the noises.”

Kim watched Uncle Mike carry a ladder in to the

house. Then he went back to the van for a small mouse

catcher box and other equipment.

Mum showed him the cupboard in Jack’s room. She

showed him the trap door in the ceiling at the top of the

stairs on the landing. It went up into the attic. Uncle Mike

carried his ladder upstairs.

“Don’t get in the way, Kim,” said Mum.

But Kim stayed where she was. She bit her nails. She

wondered what would happen. Why did Mum have to call

Uncle Mike? Jack was standing at his bedroom door.
