Kim bit her lip. Uncle Mike ran his own pest control
business.
“What? The mouse exterminator!” she said.
Jack dropped his toast in fright.
“That’s not a real name is it?” he said.
“Of course not,” said Mum. “Kim, stop upsetting
Jack. You’re always doing it. Lots of people get mice in
their houses. The people who used to live here said they’d
had trouble with them before.”
They had only been living in their new house for five
weeks. Before they moved in the old owners had shown
them around. They had said there had once been mice in
the attic and in the cupboard in Jack’s bedroom. But a
man had come and put traps down and got rid of them.
Now every time Jack heard the floor boards creak or
the radiators make a clicking sound Kim said:
“It’s the ghosts of the dead mice! They’re coming
back to haunt us!”
Jack actually believed her!
