“I usually find some evidence,” he said. “Usually

there are mouse droppings or chewed edges of carpet or

something. I haven’t found anything. I’ll tell you what I’ll

do. I’ll put one of my boxes in the attic and one in the

cupboard, just in case I’ve missed something.”

He looked at Kim and winked.

“You wouldn’t have invisible mice in your house

would you, young lady?”

Kim said nothing. She stomped into her room and

slammed the door. What Kim couldn’t understand was

how Uncle Mike could have guessed it was her. He

wouldn’t have known that her bedroom was on the other

side of Jack’s cupboard. It was easy to scratch the wall

and make it sound like mice. Mum hadn’t shown him the

second trap door in the ceiling of her bedroom. He

wouldn’t have known that she had found a way to get up

there by climbing on her bed and cupboard. She was

cross. She wasn’t going to let that Uncle Mike spoil her

tricks on Jack. Anyway, it had just been a bit of fun.
