The bottom was a soft, squelchy floor and

tunnels leading in all directions. Which way

had the Groundlings gone with Flick? It was

pitch black, but Ella had taken a torch out of

her rucksack and was searching for clues with

it.

“The footprints go this way,” she said.

“Come on. Keep close and stay near to the

walls. I’m going to have to turn the torch off.

The Groundlings might see the light.”

“Ughh!” said Jay. “Smelly, squelchy and

pitch black.”

Binny put a hand on Jay’s shoulder.

“You go in the middle,” he said. “You’ll

soon get used to the dark. Don’t be scared”

This puzzled Jay – he hadn’t actually said he

was scared of the dark tunnel. Binny had

guessed. How did people do that?
