Binny was holding his right arm. The snake

had bitten him. This was bad news. Ella put

the torch down and searched in her rucksack

for a moment. A horrible thought entered

Jay’s head. He had once seen a film where

someone had got bitten by a poisonous

snake. Someone had had to cut into the

wound and bleed out the poison. Ella held up

a pen knife.

“No!” said Jay. “You’re not...you’re not

going to do what I think you’re going to do?”

Binny was reaching for the knife.

“I’ll do it!” he winced.

Jay was horrified. He just couldn’t watch. He

turned his head so that he couldn’t see what

Binny would do. It was then that Jay saw more

of the black plants growing out of the rocks
