They froze. Jay held his breath. What had

Ella heard?

The three of them sat statue still in the

darkness. They listened. Waited. Listened.

Then Jay and Binny heard it too. It was the

soft, slow sound of creeping footsteps coming

towards them. Jay held his breath and

pressed himself back into the wall. It must be

one of the Groundlings.

“Please don’t find us! Please don’t find us!”

he thought to himself.

The three of them waited. Terrified. They

wouldn’t stand a chance if the Groundling saw

them. Down in the tunnels others would be

close behind it. They would be captured for

sure.

Binny and Ella removed their blitzers from

their belts. But it was too dark. It would be too
