to his belt. But Lewis had taken it from him as

            part of their plan to make Jay look like a real

            prisoner.

               The other Groundling was still cowering in

            the corner of the cage.

               “Get over here!” snarled the one who had

            hold of Jay. “I’ve got one of them.”

               Jay could feel his foot going numb.

               “Let go of me! Let go!” He cried. Where

            were Ella and Lewis? Why had they left him

            there?

               “It’s no good making a noise!” the

            Groundling laughed dribbling slime down his

            hairy chin. “They ain’t coming back for you.”

            He peered closely at Jay’s face. “You’re not

            like the others. There’s something different

            about you. You’d make a fine Groundling with

            a bit of training. Forget the Pioneers. They’re
