“Well, he wasn’t dead a moment ago,” one

            of them huffed. The other one gave Jay a kick

            on the shoulder. Jay didn’t even moan. If his

            eyes had been open he would have seen

            Binny reach Flick and silently lift her up. He

            would have seen Ella enter the cage.

               Suddenly it was all over in a flash.

               “Now!” someone screeched. Jay wasn’t

            sure whether it was Ella or Lewis or Binny -

            who, by now, was racing back up the tunnel

            with Flick.

               The two Groundlings had been crouching

            over Jay when Lewis pushed one of the two

            sideways. As the second Groundling turned,

            Ella had tossed a tangled capture rope over its

            head. Then Jay, Ella and Lewis - had stumbled

            out of the cage, slammed shut the door,

            turned the key and tossed it away. Then they
